Passing our knowledge and skills on helping you to choose your Dream House

The first thing any Log Home consultant or advisor will tell you is that no two Log Home Kits are the same. Each manufacturer has its own kit packages and there are no industry standards defining what is included. From a consumer’s perspective, it can seem helpful to get materials lists and cost quotes from several Log Home manufacturers to conduct price comparisons. Unfortunately, this ritual often makes the process more confusing as shoppers usually end up comparing apples to oranges. Additionally, it is difficult to put cost estimates on intangible value-adds such as service, support and experience. Log Homes

Manufactured log homes are made from logs that are milled to uniformity. This means that all the logs are produced to the exact specification to meet a specific purpose. Milled logs often require less “special attention” to fit into place and this usually means there is less labour involved in assembling manufactured log homes. This translates to lower labour costs (particularly when you add in the costs associated with having a master craftsman hand cut each log).

Hand cut log homes do offer a unique and distinctive appearance compared to milled logs, but a few Log Home manufacturers, like Luxury Log Houses, can custom treat their milled logs with a hand-hewn finish to produce the rough-cut look of hand-hewn logs while still delivering standard sized logs that will help reduce the need for chinking.

A Log Home is technically the same thing as a Log Cabin, a house typically made from logs that have not been milled into conventional lumber. The term Log Home is contemporary and preferred by most Log Home builders, while Log Cabin indicates a smaller rustic cabin, such as a hunting cabin in the woods.

There are two kinds of log homes:

  1. "handcrafted": a handcrafted Log Home is typically made of logs that have been peeled but are otherwise essentially unchanged from their original natural appearance when they were trees.

  2. "milled" (also called "machine-profiled"), made with a Log Home moulder: a milled or machine-profiled Log Home is one constructed of logs that have run through a manufacturing process which convert them into timbers that are consistent in size and appearance.

Handcrafted Log Homes have been built for centuries in Scandinavia, [1] Russia[2] and Eastern Europe. These were typically built using only an axe and knife.[3] The Scandinavian settlers of New Sweden brought the craft to North America in the early 1700s, where it was quickly adopted by other colonists and Native Americans.[4] Possibly the oldest surviving Log Home in the United States is the C. A. Nothnagle Log House (ca. 1640) in New Jersey.

In the 1920s, the first milled Log homes appeared on the market, using logs that were pre cut and shaped, rather than hand-hewn. Many log houses today are of milled variety mostly because they require less labour intensive field work than with handcrafted. There are perhaps 500 companies in North America that build the handcrafted, scribe-fit, style of Log Home.

Manufactured Log Homes

An Economical and Convenient Alternative to Hand Cut Logs

There is much debate in the Log Home community about the differences between manufactured (or milled) logs and hand cut (hewn) logs. Many traditional Log Home enthusiasts believe that the use of milled logs to build a Log Home constitutes nothing short of a mortal sin. On the other hand, more progressive Log Home enthusiasts believe that manufactured Log Home are every bit as wonderful as their hand-cut brethren. There are features and benefit unique to both methods of Log Home construction. Clicking on any of the Log Home packages below will take you to that plan's page.

Log Homes Plans

Selecting a set of Log Home plans can be a very time intensive task. Most people who are in the early phases of planning their Log Home project spend countless hours pouring over hundreds, if not thousands, of predesigned Log Home plans hoping to find the one that is just right for them. Too frequently, prospective Log Home buyers/builders waste precious time and resources looking at photos and plans of picturesque million dollar log retreats while they only have a $100,000 budget. This approach is often discouraging and can lead to unrealistic expectations. Clicking on any of the Log Home images below will take you to that plan's pdf.
